Acai Berry Benefits

For those of you who don't know, the Acai berry is a fruit of the Acai palm, a species of palm tree found predominantly in Central and South America. Groves of Acai palms flourish best in the swamps and floodplains of the Amazon rainforest and although a native flora, the rise in popularity of the Acai berry has led to an increase in its cultivation in recent years.

The Acai berry is currently reveling in all the media attention and is complimented by endless claims of its health benefits. Even great talk show hosts like Oprah Winfrey have raved on about its benefits and natural supply of antioxidants - another keyword in diet and health. Nobody can quite believe how this was kept secret for so long. It has been quoted as one of the 'super foods' on numerous occasions and supplements, along with other products that have been flying off the shelves. Many health conscious people now swear by it.

So what are all these benefits that an Acai berry can deliver? What makes them so special and how on earth did we ever survive without them?

As tiny as it is, the purple Acai berry is packed full with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fiber, and even omega 3 - fact. This ultimate in super foods really does deserve it's crown. Despite it's overwhelming statistics, there are people who want to dig out the negatives. However, have you ever heard of a fruit to have bad side-affects? It's absurd to even want to ponder what could be seen as a negative side effect. Fruits don't have negatives, they are an extremely beneficial addition to anybody's diet and the same goes for the Acai berry.

One of the major benefits of the Acai berry is its aid in strengthening the heart. Like red wine, this berry is abundant in a compound called anthocyanins. Many studies have provided evidence that this does help to strengthen the heart and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. It is worth pointing out that Acai berries are alcohol-free, so without a doubt the better option over wine. (Although the odd glass is generally harm-free!)

Furthermore, fiber and a rich source in omega fatty acids offer protection to the heart and cardiovascular system, not to mention a natural way to lower levels of bad cholesterol.

What else? Well, there is much more to the Acai berry - those of you fighting with weight loss or trying to define the onset of aging - take note. The Acai berry contains over ten times the amount ofanthocyanins as grapes and double the amount of previously worshiped blueberries. It has overtaken all other fruits to be the best at preventing signs of aging with its huge amounts of antioxidants.

In terms of weight loss, the omega fatty acids can wake up your metabolism, which allows for better functioning of the digestive system. Its fiber content means that you can nibble on these throughout the day to fill you up between meals and prevent the temptation to over-eat. As if all of these are not enough, they are also incredibly tasty and can be used in smoothies and shakes, sprinkled over cereal or just enjoyed in their purest form.
